Mr. Vicente Ruiz, a Spanish advocate of the use of free software was interviewed here. Sure there is life after Microsoft, but it still will take time before we come to that. What everyone also in the open source community have to admit is that Windows is standardized type of operating system which everyone knows and can work on. Is it a "prison" like Ruiz commented, I doubt that and if it is, then Linux is worse than prison - at the time being.

My point is that Linux defenately has its place in the server market but has a long and hard road to be the dominant OS on desktops. We have to remember 99,9% of the users are not geeks, who can code or manipulate the OS to their liking. It is the oridinary John and Mary Smiths who we have to think about and as long as every Linux OS is different from each other it is hard to conquer the market.

It is not an excuse that the OS is free. It has to be much much more, for one the users have to be taken into consideration. Linux is a great and powerful community but it is oriented by technology. Usability and users is a negative must in Linux.

Tämä uutinen on jo marraskuulta 2003, jonka olen missannut. Tämä on kirjoitus "referenssi" Suomen Microsoftin sivuilta, joten tietysti varmasti ihan koko totuutta ei kirjoituksessa tule esille. Mutta olen asiakkaiden kanssa törmännyt aivan samaan ongelmaan Linux ympäristössä. Tukea ja asiantuntijoita ei löydy helposti tai sitten kun löytyy he ovat poskettoman kalliita (joten se siitä ilmaisesta Linuxista). Mutta ongelmia Linuxin ja eri ilmaisohjelmistojen kanssa tulee aika usein.

Ennen kuin alkaa taas hirveä fleimaus asiasta, tulkoon vielä selväksi että kyllä - Linux on ilmainen. Ei ole lisenssimaksuja, mutta on kalliita konsulttimaksuja. Microsoft on (mikä tulee myöntää ihan rehellisesti) syytänyt rahaa niin paljon tuotekehitykseen, että työkaluista pyritään tekemään helppoja ja käytettäviä. Linux puolustaa varmasti paikkaansa käyttöjärjestelmämarkkinoilla, mutta sillä on vielä pitkä matka helppokäyttöisyydessä että käytettävyydessä.

Jos olet lukenut Kenneth Falckin kolumnin 15.1.2004 ITViikko-lehdessä, hän oli sitä mieltä että Microsoft on jämähtänyt työpöydälle ja "Microsoftin tuotekehityksen arvot ovat niin perusteellisesti vinoutuneet...". Kaiken tämän hän perusteli sillä että PocketPC jos jää reppuun tai työpöydälle pariksi päiväksi (kun akku loppuu) se resetoituu. Aivan, tämä on PocketPC:n yksi erittäin heikko puoli. Syy tähän on tietysti osaksi Microsoftin, mutta myös osaksi laitevalmistajien jotka eivät ole laitteita suunnitellessaan toteuttaneet "varajärjestelmää" kun akku on tyhjä.

"Kennu" yleisti näin helposti asian koskemaan kaikkea mitä Microsoft tekee, koska saman ryöpytyksen sai mm. Microsoftin Smartphone (josta hänellä ei ollut kokemusta - kirjoituksessa ei ainakaan esille tullut). Kennu, smartphone ei tyhjene vaikka akku loppuisikin - tämän voin sanoa kokemuksen syvällä rintaäänellä.

Kennu oli kirjoituksessaan ilmeisesti myös sitä mieltä että piratismin tulisi olla sallittua, koska WindowsXP mukana tuli tuoteaktivointi - joka on jo aika monissa muissakin kaupallisissa ohjelmissa, viimeisenä Adobe PhotoShop CS - joka oli huono juttu ja edustaa "kyttäyslinjaa".

Kennu, jos et halua maksaa lisenssimaksuja, vaihtoehtoisia käyttöjärjestelmiä on kuten mainitsemasi Linux. Se on sitä valinnanvapautta. Ei pidä kuitenkaan aina kirjoittaa sitä mitä sylki suuhun tuo, kannattaa sisäistää hieman asioita ja katsoa niitä oikeasta perspektiivistä.

Ilmeisesti olet jonkinasteinen Linux-fani ja se on hyvä. Keskustelun tulisi olla kuitenkin asiallista. Löydän Linuxista monta, monta huonoa asiaa (kokemuksen syvällä rintaäänellä) mutta tiedän että sekin kehittyy.

I saw Finding Nemo from Pixar today, together with my wife and son. What a great movie, funny and done greatly again by the people from Pixar. Pixar never stops to amaze me, you want always more. Can't wait for the next one to come out - The Incredibles. Finding Nemo is a must movie for everyone to see, for little ones to grown ups.
